Fethiye

Fethiye is the city of Telmessos in Lycia on the Mediterranean coast in the southwest of Anatolia, which is called the “Land of Light”.

It is said that the name Telmessos comes from the sun god Apollo. Apollo falls in love with the daughter of the Phoenician King Agenor. When he couldn’t find his face, he disguised as a cute dog to approach him, and then they had a son, named Telmessos, and Apollon named this city after his son.

The city called Telmessos, BC. It came under Persian rule in the 6th century, and then BC. Together with Alexander the Great in 333 BC, then Rome and Byzantium (Eastern Rome), it is called “Makri”, which means distant land. In the 13th century, the Byzantine domination ends with the Menteşe Principality. In 1424, Fethiye joins the Ottoman lands.
